It brings a variety of new features to the frontline, including the amazing Group FaceTime, dual SIM support, real-time Depth Control for Portrait mode, New Emoji and much more. The new update also focuses on the front-facing camera issue on iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, termed as the “beauty gate” issue.

iOS 12.1 Highlights

Group FaceTime

With the new iOS update, users will now see a completely different FaceTime with several audio and video calling upgrades. It will have a bevy of new effects, new stickers, Memoji, Animoji, and filters. It takes FaceTime to a whole different level in the app market, allowing the app users to connect as many as 32 people in a single call session.

The previous version of the application allowed only two users to conduct a video call any instance. However, with the new FaceTime, you can connect multiple video titles at an instance. The person you are actively talking on Facetime remains on the main screen while all the other members are shown in smaller screens or remain in the background.

The new Group Facetime also provides you the liberty to join and leave audio/video calls without disturbing. It means that you can join and exit the call without the host disconnecting and restarting.

The Group Audio call feature is available for users on the latest iPhones, iPads and iPods and some older versions which support the 12.1 update. However, you cannot access the FaceTime Group call feature on Apple Watches or Homepods.

Dual SIM Support

The Dual SIM support is an entirely new feature introduced in the iOS update 12.1 and is available on the new iPhone XS, XR, and XS Max. Here’s how the Dual SIM feature works in the new iOS update! With the new iOS 12.1, you get a first number which is basically your primary cell number. And, the second phone number you get is an embedded eSIM which comes as a part of the update.

You can observe the signals for both the numbers on your home screen which appears as signal indicators. Although the eSIM feature is available worldwide, its usage is limited in China. It’s because the eSIM is unavailable in China due to limitations on carrier support, therefore Apple offers a different version of the latest iPhone design which offers two physical SIM cards to users.

Real-Time Depth Control

You can now create an illusion of depth in photos using the artificial blur feature. This feature can only be used on the new iPhones and specifically in the Portrait mode of the image capture. It is something which was previously unable to achieve for small cameras on smartphones.

Once you take a click from your new iPhone XS, XR or XS Max, the smartphone allows you to make necessary edits to the blur applied on the image. With the new iOS 12.1 update, you get complete liberty to adjust the level of blur on your images. The feature is controlled with an “f” button which appears at the top of the screen. You can edit the blur using a dial which appears on the image you are editing.

Welcoming the New Animojis

Here’s the part that really creates an interest among users. The new iOS 12 adds four new Animoji and they are all pretty customizable Memoji features. iOS 12.1 has introduced several new emojis where some of these are pretty slick. For example, the redheads, bald people, iPhone X replacing iPhone 8 and many similar such characters which are making an influence among most iPhone users.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg as there are many amazing updates which are expected to roll out with the launch of iOS 12.1. There are several other updates which will be rolling out for the Apple Watch in the watchOS 5.1 which includes a number of fixes for layout issues. There will also be an update for Mac and Apple TV likewise.
